Kaiserslautern is a key part of the Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC), the largest U.S. military community outside the United States. Within the city, you’ll find several major installations including Kleber Kaserne, Daenner Kaserne, Pulaski Barracks, Kapaun Air Station and the Vogelweh Air Base area. Just a short drive away are Ramstein Air Base, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) and Sembach Kaserne. Together, these locations support thousands of service members, DoD civilian employees and their families with jobs, shopping, schools and medical services. The American presence is a big part of daily life here, creating a dynamic and multicultural atmosphere throughout the city.
Kaiserslautern has deep roots going back to Roman times. In the Middle Ages, the city gained importance when Emperor Frederick Barbarossa established a regional imperial residence in the area, known as ‘Pfalz’. Today, Kaiserslautern blends historic charm with modern living from its old town and 19th-century neighborhoods to more contemporary architecture. Landmarks like the Stiftskirche, the Theodor Zink Museum and the Japanese Garden reflect a rich and layered history that’s still part of everyday life.
Kaiserslautern has long been shaped by its close ties to the U.S. military. Bases like Pulaski Barracks and Vogelweh were established in the early postwar years and remain part of the city’s identity.
